5 interesting facts about rats
Like so many house pets we know, your pet rats like being around humans. Just like humans, they are awake during the day and sleep during the night. Rats can live with other species but always proceed with caution. Because rats are social animals with humans but with their species, it is recommended you get them a companion. Keep kept same-sex rats in this multi-rat type of household. Some varieties of rats include; ● The Standard Rat This is a common breed of the fancy rat. They are rats with short, glossy fur. The females in this category tend to have slightly longer, softer fur than the males. ● The Hairless Rat The hairless rat is a bald rat with thin and pink skin that has a gauzy quality to it. They are perfect for people that are prone to allergies and may have a reaction to a rat with fur even though they are not as cute as the standard rat. ● The Dumbo Rat Due to its large floppy ears, the Dumbo rat takes its name from Dumbo the elephant. These rose petal-shaped ears sit a lot lower on the head than other varieties. The Dumbo rat comes in all different coat colours. ● The Marked Rats Marked fancy rats usually have two different coat colours that form various patterns. These include the capped variety and the Irish variety, among others. The National Fancy Rat Society identifies 11 different types of marked rats. Rats control their bladder Pet rats are very easy to toilet train. They tend to pee to mark their territory, so if you’re a fancy rat owner and your rat pees on you consider yourself owned, they’re saying you belong to them. 2. Rats are extremely clean Even though rats are often associated with sewers and rubbish bins, rats are very clean. They spend several hours a day cleaning themselves and cleaning others is a social bonding experience, sometimes going into extreme cleaning mode as an act of dominance on a family member. They are also sensitive to unpleasant smells that can cause respiratory distress. 3. Rats are very social pets Rats love human company. They also love company so it’s best to keep them in pairs or more - preferable to avoid a lone survivor if one dies unexpectedly. This way, they will go through a period of mourning together when one of their family dies. 4. Rats don't throw up Because their stomach anatomy is different from other pets, rats do not vomit, burp, and they rarely get heartburn. This is because they have an extremely strong gastroesophageal barrier that makes it pretty much impossible to vomit or burp. 5. Rats laugh Rats are very playful animals. They like to run, jump and fight. A rat will often play wrestling with its owner’s hand, and they get the giggles. Even though they laugh, unfortunately, their laughter cannot be heard without the help of a bat detector device. The rats who laugh the most are mostly the playful ones.
